The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Programme of Labour Canada provides neutral third party assistance to labour and management to resolve disputes arising during the negotiation of collective agreements or during the term of an agreement. The Programme appoints Conciliation Officers, Conciliation Commissioners or Boards and Mediators as provided for by the Canada Labour Code (Industrial Relations). The Programme also attempts to help improve labour relations in Canada in general through the practice of preventive mediation techniques and, on occasion, through the appointment of Industrial Inquiry Commissions and Task Forces.
These central registry files reflect the activities of the Technical Support and Operational Services Branch within the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Programme. The files reflect the research activities of the Branch in Connection with collective agreements and strikes as well as a large number of related topics. File block titles include "Boards, Committees, etc.", "Projects - Labour Standards", "Projects - Industrial Relations", "Projects - International Labour Affairs", "Projects - Private Member's Bills and Motions", and "Industrial Relations and Economic Policy". Almost all of the files date from the 1970's and 1980's.
These records were accessioned after the proclamation of the Access to Information and Privacy Acts and must be reviewed in accordance with the provisions of the legislation before being made available for research.
