The Laboratory of Hygiene was created to provide special technical assistance to the Food and Drug Directorate, and provincial departments of health and hospitals to improve health laboratory services. In 1970, the Laboratory of Hygiene became the Laboratory Centre for Disease Control (LCDC). LCDC addresses specific human disease problems in epidemiological infections, chronic disease surveillance and investigation.

The records in this accession consist of four boxes of unorganized reports and files apparently from the office of the Chief of Laboratory Services. Box 1 contains reports on public health and hospital laboratory services in various provinces (1950-1960s), the history of public health and hospital labs, and files on surveys of laboratory services in Ontario. Box 2 contains files on the Institute of Parasitology, a study of health services, health insurance and their interrelationship, and a summary of patient care in hospitals less than 50 beds. The contents of Box 3 include loose papers from the Chief of Laboratory Services, some LCDC office files from the 353-3-9 (Ontario) block, copies of reports found in boxes 1-2, and organization charts. Box 4 contains a file labelled "Documents of Historical Interest" (information on the conference on "USP Reference Standard for Corticotrophin", United States Pharmacopoeia Study Panel on ACTH), and reports and publications on hospitals from Statistics Canada.
