Western Forest Products Laboratory operated under the control of the Canadian Forestry Service and its predecessors prior to its privatization in 1979, along with its eastern counterpart, as Forintek Canada Corporation.
This accession consists of a variety of records related to scientific studies conducted by the staff scientists at W.F.P.L. The majority of these records are, however, related to one particular project, a study of the physical and decay properties of aspen and balsam popular in Alberta, under the direction of James B. Kasper. Record types found here include X-ray negatives, radiographs, computer printouts, field notes, aerial photographs, IBM cards, punch paper tapes, climate maps, project proposals, etc. In addition, there are also several boxes containing wood samples (cores, radials and wedges) related to this project.

These records were originally held in British Columbia. They were transferred to the National Capital Region in 2016 and are available for consultation there.
