Interview of Dr. Jack Ernest Brown by Don Phillipson. Subjects discussed include: Brown's employment at the New York Public Library from 1942 to 1957; securing the position of National Science Librarian at NRC in 1957; government libraries included Library of Parliament and NRC library; approval for a new National Science Library in 1957; CISTI building not built until 1967; in 1957, Babbitt formed the Associate Committee on Scientific Information, which continued until superseded in 1970, and which helped with the National Science Film Library, Bond Survey of science and technology information library holdings, and helped make the National Science Library better known in Ottawa; 1957 saw the first Canadian Union List of Scientific Serials completed by the NRC; use of computers as data banks; Division of Computer Science; Tyas Committee and recommendations and the Lamontagne report lead to CISTI's new mandate and organization; and the CISTI building construction began in 1971. <1h 47mn>
