Sir David Low (1891-1963) was born in New Zealand. His strength as a cartoonist led him to become one of the most important and influential artists working in Britain during the first half of the 20th century.

This cartoon was published in London, England, in the Evening Standard. The aircraft is a de Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk, first flown in 1946. The 1940 "baby" represents the infant British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. The child gestures with his right arm, pointing to the "1940" over his head, the date the plan started. This was one of Canada's unique contributions to the Second World War effort. By 1945 the 231 training sites had been established across Canada producing some 130,000 air crew including pilots, navigators, bombers, wireless operators, gunners and flight engineers. Recruits came from Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Newfoundland, France, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Norway. Four men in airforce uniform in the foreground wave at the child standing on top of the aircraft and are labelled: Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Britain. Canada also provided support personnel and administrative staff to enable a successful effort. With the political will behind Prime Minister Mackenzie King, the enterprise supported the efforts to expand the Royal Canadian Air Force.

David Low's popular cartoons about the war incensed the enemy to the point where his name was added to a Gestapo hit list, to be used after Britain's defeat. He was knighted in 1962 for his achievements, but died only one year later.

Physical description note:

A small piece of paper tape has been pasted over the "Britain" figure's head, suggesting the artist changed the original and filled in this new head.

Note on the state of conservation:

The cartoon is in very good condition.

Custodial history:

This drawing, Lot no. 4066, was purchased from Ritchie's Auctioneers and Appraisers at their auction sale no. 538, on May 20, 1999. This caricature is from the collection of Hart Massey, RCAF, Toronto, Ontario.
