The large undated reproduction is an illustration of the Hamilton Cotton Company Limited mill, with people and vehicles in motion around it. It depicts a thriving large square shaped building complex with an extension on one side, with one prominent smoke-stack. It has inner courtyards and some smaller buildings inside them. There are other buildings, surrounding it in the middle-ground and back-ground. The transport vehicles depicted include a locomotive, trucks, cars, motorcycles (1930-1940 era) and horse-drawn carts. There are also over 30 people including men, women and children in clothing from the same era scattered throughout the active scene. Although the company was founded in 1880 it was incorporated in 1928, remaining in the textile business until 1970, later operating as a diversifiied holding and investment company under the name: The Hamilton Group Ltd. The mill itself was demolished ca. 1983.

Physical description note:

This work was originally framed under glass. The illustrated paper is laid down to a cardboard backing. The frame (now removed) was a flat wood frame with hanging hardware and wire on verso. There was an inscribed brass label attached to the bottom of the frame (removed and placed in an envelope with the artwork).

Note on the state of conservation:

The illustration is damaged with a horizontal crack in the backing board and surface. The u.l. corner is also detached. The backing cardboard is very brittle and acidic. (2014).

Custodial history:

Item is part of a group of company records of the Hamilton Cotton Company, collected and preserved by David Brown. Brown was a Hamilton school teacher and collector who salvaged these records from the mill before its demolition in 1983. The records were subsequently donated by his estate to Library and Archives Canada in 1999.
