Canada under the leadership of Louis St. Laurent is documented in this program hosted by journalist/historian Bruce Hutchison. National and international events are portrayed through archival footage, including: Quebec City, where St. Laurent studied law; his address to the nation as Prime Minister (1948); World Wars I and II; the Great Depression (1929); Japanese Canadians being taken to internment camps; Russian defector Igor Gouzenko; displaced Europeans arriving in Canada; Marilyn Monroe performing for Korean troops; Elvis Presley, Pat Boone and Paul Anka performing (1950s); excerpts of early programs from Canada's first television network (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation), including Percy Saltzman's weather forecasts; U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy during Communist investigations; and Marilyn Bell swimming Lake Ontario. St. Laurent's "chairman of the board" approach and major issues such as conscription, the Suez Canal Crisis and the Pipeline Debate are discusses in interviews, including: former Conservative cabinet minister Richard Bell; former Prime Ministers Lester B. Pearson and John G. Diefenbaker; journalists Norman Campbell, J. Alex Hume, and Peter Stursberg; former Liberal ministers J.W. Pickersgill, James Sinclair, and C.D.
