This photograph album was compiled by Edwin Pye, an enlisted soldier who served on strength of the 5th Canadian Infantry Battalion in France and Belgium. Pye was promoted twice before he was seriously wounded at Courcelette, in September, 1916. Following the war, Pye worked as a civilian historical researcher for the Army Historical Section.

These photographs depict ordinary life during the war in France and Belgium. It is unclear which of these photographs were taken by Pye, although handwritten captions indicate the photos in which he appears. It is possible that some of the other prints (particularly those dated later than Pye's time in France and Belgium) were sourced commercially from official photographers. However, many of these photographs were taken during the time when soldiers were banned from having cameras at the front and offer a glimpse of the Canadian experience of war (including scenes of Ypres, Festubert, Givenchy, Messines and the Somme) before and during the early stages of the Canadian War Records Office's photographic projects. The album also includes 10 loose prints.

Custodial history:

This record was compiled by Edwin Pye (b. 1893) who had served with the 5th Infantry Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) during the First World War, and was later a historian employed by the Army Historical Section in the interwar era. This album was found in the National Defence Headquarters Library in August, 1976. It was added to the Pye Papers at the Public Archives.
