The Laboratory of Hygiene was created to provide special technical assistance and expert advice to the Food and Drug Directorate in the control of special drugs known as biologics. The Laboratory also provided assistance to provincial departments of health and hospitals in order to improve health laboratory services. In 1970, the Laboratory of Hygiene became the Laboratory Centre for Disease Control (LCDC). The LCDC addresses specific human disease problems in epidemiological infections and chronic disease surveillance and investigation. The Centre's tasks involve such things as the identification of various cultures (such as salmonella or staphylococcus) sent in by provincial and hospital laboratories, disease surveillance (involving weekly and quarterly reports on the status of various diseases in and around Canada), and maintenance of programs for improved biosafety in laboratories.

The records in this accession consist of the operational files of the Centre from 1974 to 1982. The material includes correspondence, requests for analysis of samples, forms giving the results of analyses, monthly enforcement reports, and reports of adverse drug reactions.
