This accession consists of a selection of case files from Employment and Immigration Canada's Immigration Field Office in Edmundston, New Brunswick. Field offices are the primary contact for all immigrants to Canada other than those arriving with completed documentation, all visitors requiring special documentation, and all persons wishing to sponsor or guarantee the immigration of relatives abroad. Since a number of Ministerial powers have been delegated to the CIC level, these field offices can also issue and extend Minister's permits and issue permits to returning residents. Most CICs also undertake investigation of immigration irregularities, and represent the Program at formal inquiry hearings involving refused claims, deportations, and exclusions.
This accession consists of a selection of records taken under the provisions of authority 87/008, and transferred from Employment and Immigration. There are "precedent setting" or "fat files", along with an "F" sample (all case files on persons whose surname begins with the letter F).
Documentation contained in these files is often similar to that found in the case files received from the Department of External Affairs overseas "JID" posts. This includes: (a) the four page IMM 8 form (formerly O.S 8 form) in which applicants for immigration to Canada give details on identification, including a photograph, and family, work and personal history; (b) notes and internal reports on the individual; and (c) local correspondence with the applicant. Many of these local files contain applications to alter an immigrant's status, replies from searches of records at the Query Response Centre, transcripts of hearings, and visitor records. There is also a large amount of records relating to policy decisions made concerning irregular situations. A significant portion of the records is in the French language.
