Newsreel report on 15 Second World War veterans learning the trade of diamond cutter, in a Toronto factory, under arrangement with the Department of Veterans' Affairs. The Toronto plant produced industrial diamonds during the Second World War and has now converted to peacetime production of diamonds. The student workers are paid while they are trained. The plant was started with trained diamond cutters who fled from the Netherlands and Belgium to escape the Nazis. They are now teaching their craftsmanship to the new Canadian workers. The plant also employs several Canadian veterans who had worked with them before their military service. Subject description is based on shotlist by the National Film Board, which identifies this as VETERANS TURN OUT SPARKLE, gives the date as February 1946 and says that this is Canadian film material submitted by the National Film Board of Canada and that this footage has been approved and passed by Canadian censors.~2. Shotlist indicates that the still photographs included in the footage are by George Hunter.
