Based on the popular underground magazine, the Heavy Metal movie was made up of five segments based on five different stories that had been printed in the magazine. The movie was produced and made in Toronto, Ontario. Because it was created in Canada, many actors from the TV comedy Second City leant their voices to the production.

This item is based on the Den sequence of the movie, regarded by film critics as the best sequence in the film. In it, an underweight nerd is pulled into a universe where he is a buff, well-endowed male known as Den who saves a young maiden from an evil cult. The character was voiced by famous actor John Candy with heavy involvement from the characters original creator, Richard Corben. Corben wrote both the story and supplied original artwork for the Den sequence which Corben felt was very satisfactory upon completion. Corben even looked over every piece of animation for the sequence to be sure that he was satisfied with it. The Den sequence has been universally hailed by film critics as the best feature in the movie due to Corbens involvement.

The film was animated using a process known as rotoscoping, where a human is filmed and then the animation is added over this footage. This technique has been used by everyone from Walt Disney to Ralph Bakshi to help capture human motion accurately.
