Throughout most of its history the Department of Labour has carried out an annual survey of Labour organizations in Canada with the results either in the Labour Gazette (before its demise) or as a separate publication. (The latest issue is Directory of Labour Organizations in Canada, 1986, Ottawa, 1986). This publication gives statistics on union membership in Canada, and the size and number of labour organizations, and also provides a list of the principal unions in Canada with their address and names of officers.
These files contain correspondence between the Department of Labour with individual unions and labour centres such as the Canadian Labour Congress with regard to the survey, its changing structure and uses. Also included are completed survey forms. Not all the information included on the forms was published by the Department.
