Gladstone, James, 1887-1971 : A member of the Blood Tribe of the Blackfoot Nation, James Basil Gladstone was born at on the Kainai Reserve near Mountain Hill, North-West Territories (present day Alberta), on May 21, 1887. Considered Cree through his birth father, he was adopted by the Kainai Nation through his mother; he was eventually be granted full Indian status in 1920. In 1911, he married Janie Healy (1892-1977), a Blood, with whom he had six children: Lucy, Fred, Nora, Horace, Doreen and Pauline.

As a child, James Gladstone attended St. Paul's Anglican Residential School (until 1903), and later studied as an apprentice printer at the Calgary Indian Industrial School. In 1905, he returned to the Kainai Reserve where he took on different types of work, notably as a successful cattle rancher and interpreter and scout for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. His political involvement in the Indian Association of Alberta began in the 1940's; he was instrumental in the formation of two local IAA chapters in the Kainai Nation. Gladstone was elected president of the IAA in 1949 and again in 1956, during which time he fought for better education, respect for treaty rights and more self-determination for Aboriginal peoples. He was appointed to the Senate in 1958, and became the first treaty Indian to do so in Canadian history, continuing on as an advocate for the rights of Aboriginal peoples in such roles as co-chair of the Joint Committee on Indian Affairs. James Gladstone passed away in 1971, in Fernie, British Columbia, only a few months after his retirement from the Senate. A bronze bust of Senator Gladstone, wearing a feathered headdress, was unveiled in the Senate antechamber in 2001.
