Description:

The footage begins with the crest of the Essex (Tank) Regiment and is then followed by images of a military parade being held downtown Ottawa. There are images of Winston Churchill walking downtown Ottawa, and of Mr. Churchill and William Lyon MacKenzie King together. While there is no sound, the text for the short speech given by WLM King is included in inter-titles: “If Nazi Germany is not defeated there will be little freedom, truth and justice left in this world. If, on the other hand, we are earnest in our desire to have freedom, truth and justice prevail in all human relations we should be prepared to fight as men have never fought before.” The speech is followed by more images of different parts of downtown Ottawa and other images of different military units and more of the military parade. <13m, 25s>

1. Original film was suffering from vinegar syndrome, however, the visual quality is still satisfactory. ~2. There is no sound with the footage, and while there are intertitles for a portion of William Lyon Mackenzie King's speech, most of the film is silent footage. ~3. Researchers should note that there is only a small amount of footage dealing specifically with the Essex (Tank) Regiment. It was probably included in the recording and labelling of the original recording as the Essex Regimennt was established and based out of Windsor, Ontario, the home of Paul Martin Sr. ~4. While the original case for the film had the year 1939 written upon it, Winston Churchill did not make any official visits to Canada in 1939. It is believed the footage is from his visit in December of 1941.
