The National Museum of Natural Sciences is responsible for the collection, preservation and use of the physical specimens in the sciences of Botany, Geology, Palaeobiology and Zoology. The Museum grew out of the Geological Survey of Canada, which began in 1842 collecting geological and archaelogical materials. In 1877, collections were expanded to include botanical, zoological and ethnographic specimens and artifacts. The entire collection was moved from Montreal to Ottawa in 1881. In 1907 the Geological Survey of Canada was amalgamated into the newly created Department of Mines and in 1910 moved into the Victoria Memorial Museum Building.
By an Act of Parliament in 1927, the Museum Branch of the Department of Mines became the National Museum of Canada. In 1957 the Museum was divided into two branches - Human History and Natural History. In 1968 the National Museums Corporation was created with the National Museum of Natural Sciences being one of its components.
This accession consists of the operational files of the National Museum of Natural Sciences. Topics covered include its relationship with various groups such as the Entomological Society of Canada, the Canadian Wildlife Federation, the American Association of Museums, its relationship with the provincial museums and its relationship with other federal government departments. Also included in this accession are the records of some of the committees that the National Museum of Natural Sciences participated in such as the International Committee on Museums, the National Museums Corporation's Coordinating Committee, the Public Programs Committees and the Advisory Committee for Scientific Responsibility Group.
