The Non-Medical Use of Drugs Directorate was part of the Health Protection Branch of the Department of National Health and Welfare during the 1970s. Its mandate was to reduce the health and social problems caused by the non-medical use of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. Through its Research Bureau, grants were made available for research programs directly related to the goals of the Non-Medical Use of Drugs Directorate. The responsibilities of the Directorate were taken over by the newly-formed Health Services and Promotion Branch in 1978.

This accession is comprised of files relating to grants awarded and administered by the Directorate in the areas of research and the provision of services to people using drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. The files are arranged numerically by project, and contain grant applications, research proposals, evaluations, accounting paperwork, budgets, and copies of progress reports and final reports.
