The Policy and Liaison program in Labour Canada is reponsible for providing the Minister of Labour with policy advice on federal-provincial relations, international relations, and labour-related economic issues. Operating under the direction of an assistant deputy minister, the program consists of three branches - Federal-Provincial Relations, International Relations, and Policy and Strategic Analysis. According to the 1985-86 Annual Report of the department, the Policy and Liaison program also administers the department's Technology Impact Research Fund which awarded .8 million in 1985-86 to labour organizations, women's groups, and academic institutions studying the human and social aspects of technological change in the workplace.
These central registry files deal mainly with the Policy and Liaison program's activities in the area of international relations. One run of files dealing with ratification of International Labour Organization conventions goes back to 1919 but most files in this accession date from the 1960's and 1970's.
