Interview of Dr. J. Stewart Marshall by Don Phillipson. Subjects discussed include: his education and early beginnings; organizational problem of how to manage radio branch; central registry at NRC; D.C. Rose; L.E. Howlett; Marshall's only war project was counter-chronograph based on his Cavendish lab and on equipment for atomic scaling circuits and related photoelectric screens; starting and stopping times set by physical screens (foil screens) by photoelectric cells looking at Lumiline lights or at the sky; leading to production model counter-chronograph which was superior to UK product; superior US system uses radio transmitter inside shell but inaccurate in practice; NRC counter-chronograph used through Italian campaign, and produced by Sparton Ltd., of London, Ontario; prewar measurements probably done without direct measurement of velocity; during war, Dupont wanted cheap chronograph so NRC adapted photo electric screens for drop chronograph; NRC ignored patents during wartime; Queen's University - Robertson's influence on students, where prewar age class was more productive than postwar group; Marshall expected to resume nuclear physics at McGill postwar; Marshall got into atmospheric physics via Army operational Research; J. Tuzo Wilson; first weather radar activity was time lapse pictures; meteorologists welcomed Marshall leading to Marshall becoming chairman at McGill's Department of Meteorology; radar/weather group remained in Ottawa; first radar installed at Dorval where there was good cooperation with meteorologists; NRC/meteorological service training program; McGill had Arctic Meteorological Research Group under Dr. Ken Hare; Andrew Thompson was a pioneer from 1937 to 1942; late 1930s, University of Toronto had a Met service; later McGill University set up a genuine university department of Meteorology, and the Met Service supported it by sending half their trainees to McGill; Clement Henry “Bunty” McLeod, an engineer at McGill Observatory; Alberta Hail project; NRC Wartime Inventions Board involved many staff; Dr. Cook's willingness and engineering skill attributable to farm origins; Dr. D.C. Rose; wartime salary freeze; Montreal Atomic Group; and the War Security at NRC. <2h 57mn>

1. Subject description taken from partial transcript in binder, National Research Council Oral History Project, Index M-Q.~2. PAC tape 584 a and b.~3. John Stewart Marshall (1911-1992) went to Cambridgeas an 1851 Exhibition Scholar from Canada, in 1933, and interacted with Rutherford in the Cavendish Laboratory. He had a long career at McGill, pioneering radar meteorology and creating Canada's first Department of Meteorology. (Rutherford's Legacy to Canada - Vogt)
