The Environmental Health Directorate created in 1969 consists of three bureaus (the Bureau of Chemical Hazards, the Bureau of Medical Services, and the Radiation Protection Bureau) which collectively serve to identify, assess, and reduce health hazards in the environment, in consumer products, and in medical devices.

The Radiation Protection Bureau through its activities endeavours to protect members of the Canadian public from the dangers associated with radioactivity. To this end, it monitors radioactivity levels in the air and water, evaluates radioisotope licence applications, measures and records radiation exposures, evaluates consumer products as well as numerous other activities.

The records in this accession cover the multifarious functions of the Bureau and include files on such topics as, gas discharge tubes, X-Ray devices, laser scanners, etc. Included also are minutes of various committees, councils, and conferences such as the Committee on Industrial Radiography, Mine Safety Committee, the Environmental Monitoring Advisory Committee, International Conference on Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, and many others.
