The Canadian Sports Pool Corporation came into existence as a result of the passage by Parliament of the Athletic Contents and Events Pools Act (29-30-31-32 Elizabeth c.161, assented to 29 June 1983). During 1984 Sports Pool operated a weekly pool on professional baseball games called Sport Select with a minimum prize pool of 50,000 weekly. The last Sport Select pool ended 30 September 1984. Sport Pool had offices in 14 Canadian cities. These records were drawn from the Ottawa and Montreal offices which served, each in turn, as the corporation's headquarters (Ottawa 1983-1984, Montreal 1984). They consist of by-laws, regulations, executive committee minutes, legal files and in sum, represent the primary corporate files of the organization. Also included are key files on Sports Pool planning and marketing strategies.
These records were transferred to the Public Archives by the Records Improvement office of Health and Welfare Canada, who received them from the Departmental Accounting Division of Health and Welfare which had responsibility for doing the final audit on Canadian Sports Pool Corporation following the government's decision of October 1984 to dissolve the Corporation. A bill bringing the Canadian Sports Pool Corporation to an end received third reading in the House of Commons in June, 1985.
