Continuation of the interview of Dr. Robert Newton by Don Phillipson. Subjects discussed include: NRC committee on oceanography; National conference on oceanography in 1939; Dr. C.J. Stevenson; NRC function of financing pre-1940 meetings was valuable catalyst for much progress; NRC Committee on biology in 1923 and Committee on biophysics in 1929; BGC (British Grain Centre?) and Burchard; Dr. W.F. Geddes; R.A. Gortner; Dr. R. McGibbon; cereals chemistry vis-à-vis nutrition research; NRC vis-à-vis University of Alberta and Alberta Research Council; Hector Stansfield; Dr. Karl A. Clarke; tar sands; wet grain harvest in 1926 and the building of dryers and small laboratory models to research safe temperatures, leading to the creation of NRC's Grain Research Committee; landmark success for prairie agriculture was Dr. W.H. Cook's first project of grain drying; wheat frost-hardiness led to lower prices to farmers and a research freezer was built at University of Alberta; NRC did analysis of weather from 1932 to 1940; A.C. Halferdahl and Miss Whalley; Magnesite was a furnace fire hazard and its use was stopped by Gen A.G.L. McNaughton; Kathleen Ellis; Vilda Weatherup; unpaid NRC staff; Dr. Carl Winkler; Dr. J.B. Conant; initial wartime research effort - army rations list; freeze-drying blood serum; NRC jurisdiction led to creation by Army of regional labs including at University of Alberta; Association Committee medical research; W.P. Fraser (role of annual surveys), Dr. J.B. Collip; W.P. Thompson (role of wheat breeding); A.R.H. Buller (role of planning rust research), Bisby and Ibra Conners; Buller chose Winnipeg for mushroom population; prairie universities shared exchange lecturer; Dr. W.P. Thompson spotted natural wheat rust resistance and planned crosses therefore became leading prairie cytologist; Huskins; Margaret Newton researched rust strains; Boomer was a chemist who planned Chalk River Labs for NRC via associate committees such as nuclear, and chaired the Alberta Gas Commission; NRC sent Boomer to survey German war research; Dr. J.B. Collip on Brownian motion of blood corpuscles, and Collip's role in Insulin; Dr. F. Banting and Charles H. Best won and shared Nobel Prize; Trade Minister H.H. Stevens. <2h 8mn>
