Interview of Dr. Pat D. McTaggart by Don Phillipson. Subjects discussed include: the critique of the Lamontagne report; how forestry was ignored by NRC since the Dominion Forest Service existed already, and NRC neglected to support university forestry until June 1975; NRC attitude towards initial support of university meteorology; Dr. H.G. Thode; Dr. Pierre Gendron; Dr. Ian McTaggart- Cowan; Cr. C.J. Mackenzie; Dr. W.H. Cook; the boom of 1946-1957 is attributable to both C.D. Howe's personality and world demand in unknown proportions; many Canadian factories were well equipped; industrialists knew where they stood and had personal rapport; postwar aviation development failed at the end of the Korean War via RCAF/Ministry of Transportation power struggle; NRC postwar Associate Committees on Aeronautics worked well initially; A.V.M. James (RCAF); Dr. J.H. Parkin; Dr. J.J. Green; Dr. Gordon Shrum; Dr. F.H. Sanders; S.P. Peters; between 1936 and 1942, McTaggart- Cowan had intermittent contact with NRC concerning snow clearance and icing; in 1942, he had closer contacts with NRC as NRC established standard design criteria for the ice wagon; then in 1945, as head of the Ministry of Transportation weather, McTaggart-Cowan developed an even closer relationship with NRC, especially regarding the weather radar bright band effect where the Ministry of Transportation loaned staff to the NRC and other governmental departments; Les Tibbles; Stuart Marshall; Alberta Hail Project: Canadian application of early General Electric cloud seeding; Dr. Nat Grace and the Alberta Research Centre; Vince Schaefer; Vonnegut; Andrew Thompson; NRC provided radar equipment and McGill provided the scientific base; John Orr; Ken Pettit; NRC grants function; Dr. Malcolm Brown; Dr. Maurice Leclair; Jerry Hobbs; Pierre Gendron; Cagney; biology came of age in Canada only with Cook's generation of researchers; 1945 reconstruction conference and NRC's postwar budget cut 4 million dollars; Robert Bryce; Dr. J.J. Deutch; Allan; Steele; USAF attempted to withdraw from McGill Stormy Weather Group opening of M-58 returned administration to Laboratory environment; Ward Greenwood and Don Bennett; Dmitri Hunka; Dr. W.E.K. Middleton; and the Glassco Commission and NRC's small attention to industry. <2h 15mn>
