Interview of Malcolm S. Kuhring by Don Phillipson. Subjects discussed include: power plant committee - jet engines; government paid half of the research and development but required results be published; Kuhring had hiring authority for mechanical engineers; Kuhring's employment included the Canadian Air Force, Canadian Vickers Ltd., Reed Aircraft (later Curtiss-Reed); Kuhring first heard of NRC via a test pilot; NRC planned an engine lab, test basin and a wind tunnel; planned that mechanical engineering and radio divisions should break off from physics, for example when the Gas and Oil Lab split from the Engine Lab; the cooperation between divided labs was good; diesel loco lab was built by engineering lab's own staff to save time; engine lab was the old Edwards Mill boiler house under the river level; Canadian government had international obligation for type tests on aircraft engines; goals of NRC in 1945 - government adviser, applied engineering problems, industrial co-operation hampered by U.S. ownership of Canadian plants; in 1945, NRC Automobile Associate Committee was mooted and shunned by the industry; RCAF seconded staff to NRC in the 1930s to gain experience; Montreal Road labs land was acquired by McNaughton on the pretext that the engine labs were too noisy - court order banning work after 8PM; engine lab built on Dead Horse Hill; Dr. J.J. Greene and Kuhring went to England during the early Montreal Road construction; wartime expansion was due primarily to type testing of engines; cast-cylinder design to rebuild Armstrong-Siddeley engines, and releasing over 2000 engines for training; in 1940, Mechanical Engineering section heads asked to resign to join the RCAF when the salary freeze inhibited recruitment to the NRC and NRC engineers resigned to go into industry; war spoils shipping was so costly so Kuhring picked scientific instruments rather than tanks for NRC; and H.G.
