This photograph depicts the proceedings of the 1980 National Conference of Ethnocultural Organizations founding meeting. This conference took place in the Holiday Inn at Toronto and lasted from April 25th to April 27th, 1980. The purpose of the event was to bring together a number of ethnic and cultural representatives together to work and create initiatives to further Canada as a multicultural society. The Conference specifically was organized so that the groups could come together, establish a hierarchy and lay out the priorities and issues that the organization would deal with. Some of the top priorities were protection of human rights in Canada, education, and the use of media. Representatives from the Canadian government were present and spoke at this inauguration, including Minister of Multiculturalism James Fleming and head of the Canadian Consultative Committee on Muliculturalism, Laurence Decore.

The individuals in the picture with minster Fleming are Bert Kivimaki, the representative for the Finnish Canadian Cultural Federation and Laureno Leone, director of the Ethnocultural Committee.
