Recording of Farley Mowat’s experiences during a tour of the Canadian North, including interviews of people in various northern communities. This program, the eighth in the series, visits Frobisher Bay. Farley Mowat talks about the settlement by Martin Frobisher. The United States spent millions of dollars to build an airport and air strip at Frobisher during the building of the DEW line, but the introduction of jet airplanes meant the doom of Frobisher Bay. The Inuit are a displaced people. The population is composed of 500 white people and 1,000 Inuit. Gordon Rennie, manager of the Hudson Bay Company store, remains optimistic. Also mentioned are three communities in the Frobisher Bay area -- Apex Hill; the Frobisher base and [Iqaluit], an Inuit settlement. A few Inuit families make a living from hunting and trapping. The Hudson Bay Company buys some sealskins but does not buy furs. The Hudson Bay Company store is a retail store and employs three Inuit. The economic situation in Frobisher Bay is discussed. The airport is not busy and employment depends on government services. The broadcast also mentions Michael Simonee, the first Inuit to be elected to the Northwest Territories Council. Simonee was first employed as a cook with the U.S. government, then as a carpenter with the Department of Northern Affairs. He also worked as an interpreter and took part in Inuk Ltd., a bus company in Frobisher owned and operated by Inuit. The company also provides cleaning services for government buildings. Several Inuit hold shares in the company. Simonee feels that Inuit are ready to look after their own affairs. The Inuit need an Inuit leader to direct them in their own affairs. Inuit would like to live with the whites without the great difference in living conditions that exists now. Frobisher is an example of white society’s lack of understanding of Inuit people. However, Pangnirtung is a different community. Ross Peyton, former Hudson Bay Company fur trader, wants to live in Pangnirtung and helps Inuit to live there. Also discussed is the handicraft enterprise established there. The enterprise makes crafts from sealskins. It takes in about 10,000 sealskins each year, from all sorts of seals. It equipped Inuit with good rifles and telescopic sights to help them to kill such a great number of seals in one season. A few tanneries are able to treat the skins. He lost a catch of skins and his market due to poor tanning. The Department of Northern Affairs plans to establish a sealskin tannery at Frobisher where there are varied sources of employment for Inuit and very few sealskins trapped. Patton thinks it would be better to put the tannery in Pangnirtung where there are no sources of employment and a great deal of sealskins. He is thinking of setting up his own tannery in Pangnirtung. <29mn>
