Recording of Farley Mowat’s experiences during a tour of the Canadian North, including interviews of people in various northern communities. This is the fourth program in the series. Farley Mowat recalls the great explorers who perished during their explorations of Hudson Bay. He feels that Hudson Bay should be named the Canadian Sea. He lands at Chesterfield, which is almost deserted. Inuit have moved away from Chesterfield due to the loss of the fur trade and the monopoly by religious missions over education. Mowat continues to Coral Harbour on Southhampton Island. He encounters flocks of snow geese. There is an interview of Fred Burningham about hunting on land and sea. Inuit trade furs to the Hudson Bay Company and range several miles away from Coral Harbour on their hunting expeditions. Approximately 10 Inuit are employed by the Department of Transport and the Department of Northern Affairs. Inuit in Coral Harbour earn their living mostly by the fur trade. There is no industry, no handicraft enterprise and no co-operative store there. The polar bear hunt is important. There used to be caribou hunting before the caribou became extinct in the area. It is probable that the younger Inuit will not want to be hunters but rather will seek wage employment, but some youngsters long to go hunting. Mowat expresses concern that young, educated and trained Inuit may have trouble finding employment in southern Canada because of racial discrimination. Fred Birmingham feels that this discrimination will not be evident in Canada’s multiracial society. At Cape Dorset, James Houston introduced art techniques to the Inuit. Arts and craft enterprises now account for the largest economic revenue in Cape Dorset and throughout the North. Mowat interviews Terry Ryan, who speaks about Inuit artists and the market for Inuit art. However, the government should not place too great an onus on arts and crafts enterprises. Good artists do not feel that they are supporting the less talentedartists in the enterprise. The arts co-operative in Cape Dorset has been very successful and people there are self-assured. <29mn>
