The National Harbours Board was created in 1936 as an agency corporation with jurisdiction over various harbours and grain elevator facilities, including the port of Vancouver. The port administration is responsible for the maintenance, upgrading and expansion of port facilities and infrastructures in order to ensure the provision of safe and efficient services and facilities to local, national, and international port users.
This accession consists of files pertaining to a wide variety of port activities. The records include a series of cargo manifest registers as well as files on routine matters such as the safety and security of port facilities, damages claimed by and against the port, the contracting out of work to private companies for port repairs and improvement, agreements with private companies for the provision of port services and equipment, and the operation of port piers and other administrative matters. In addition this accession also contains several files on the development and management of port containerization facilities, studies and reports on various west coast economic and commercial organizations and their possible impact on port operations, as well as scattered files on the port's involvement on various local, national, and international committees.

Custodial history:

These records were originally held in British Columbia. They were transferred to the National Capital Region in 2016 and are available for consultation there.
