Moving from the Department of Transport to the Department of the Environment in 1972, the Atmospheric Environment Service is responsible for providing historical, current, and predictive meteorological, marine, and ice information for all areas of Canada and adjacent waters primarily to the departments of Transport and National Defence as well as distributing weather forecasting information to the general public.
This accession consists of both operational and administrative files. The operational files mainly pertain to the AES' efforts to identify and obtain a site suitable for the construction of a meteorological tower in the Vancouver area for the purposes of collecting air pollution data. The administrative files largely concern financial and other administrative details concerning conference attendance and preparation, as well as papers distributed for study and comment prior to conferences or committee meetings.

These records were originally held in British Columbia. They were transferred to the National Capital Region in 2016 and are available for consultation there.
