The Public Affairs Directorate (PAD) is responsible for National Health and Welfare's public relations with the media and governmental and non-governmental agencies, as well as with members of the general public. The PAD, formerly the Information Directorate, issues national news releases, conducts media interviews, advertises departmental activities, and performs publishing and design services on the Department's behalf.

The records in this accession contain files on such subjects as the Federal Identity Program, Advisory Committee on Health Insurance, Federal-Provincial Conference on the Deputy Ministers of Health, and international health services. Included also are public relations and publicity publications prepared by the Directorate as well as a series of departmental press releases dating from 1959 to 1979.
