Founded in 1972 after mass arrests of dissidents in the Ukraine, the Committee for the Defense of Valentyn Moroz was a Canadian committee in defense of Soviet political prisoners that aimed to inform and educate the Canadian public and media about the violations of human rights in the USSR. The committee was named after Moroz, a Ukrainian historian and one of the more prominent dissidents. Soon after being established, the committee expanded its activities to defend Soviet political prisoners regardless of their nationality, religious or political beliefs. The name was later changed to the Committee for the Defense of Ukrainian Political Prisoners.
