The material originates from the World War II war diary of the 1st Battalion, The Essex Scottish Regiment. The Essex Scottish Regiment are from the Windsor area in Ontario. At the commencement of the Second World War, the 1st Battalion of The Essex Scottish Regiment left for Europe as part of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division; they arrived in England in late August 1940. The 1st Battalion was part of the Dieppe Raid in August 1942, which left the Regiment almost completely decimated. In July 1944, the 1st Battalion of The Essex Scottish Regiment returned to France, making their way into The Netherlands.

With the exception of two printed posters, most of the items are original pieces of work dating from October 1944 to December 1944. The artist can only be identified by their signature, 'K. Hook'. The geographic details found inscribed on the majority of these items locate their place of creation as being Mook en Middlelaar and Groesbeek, The Netherlands. The contextual inscriptions of the creator advise us that this is where the Essex Scottish were stationed in a reserve role toward the end of WWII.

The original order of these items cannot be deciphered since they have been separated from the Essex Scottish Regiment war diary, their context of creation and accumulation. The original works of art have been arranged chronologically; the posters have been kept together and arranged by date, as well.

Custodial history:

This material was received by LAC shortly after the end of the Second World War in 1950 (the exact date is unknown). Until 2005, the materials were kept with the war diary held by the Government Records Division. During LAC's move from the West Memorial Building to Place de la Cité in 2005, the graphic materials associated to this war diary were transfered to the Society and Cultural Expression Branch of LAC.
