Proceedings of the 1979 Zionist Symposium on the topic of "North America, Israel's Friend or Foe?" sponsored by the Toronto Student Zionists and the Jewish Student's Union and held at the University of Toronto. Opening remarks by Professor Harry Crowe, Department of History York University, talking about: the Zionist symposium, the dedication of the Symposium to Golda Meir's memory; participants in the Zionist Symposium-Dan Miriaschen, John Roberts and Emil Fackenheim. This is followed by a speech entitled "The Tenuous Balance: The American/The Jew in Middle East Politics", by Dan Miriaschen, Director of Middle East Affairs, Anti-Defamation League New York about: United States, United States foreign polcy; 1973-1974 Arab Oil Embargo; United States, US Middle East policy after the Embargo, "even handed" approach of the US to the Middle East; Israel, US policy towards Israel; politics, politics in the Middle East: Iran, communist attitudes in Iran, unrest in Iran, urban guerrillas in Iran etc. This is followed by a speech entitled "The Dynamics of Canadian Middle East Relations" by the Hon. John Roberts, Secretary of State, about: Canada; The Middle East; Israel, Canadian-Israeli relations; Canaada, Canada's role in the peace keeping forces, etc. Followed by a speech entitled "The Ideology Behind the Connection" by professor Emil Fackenheim about: ideology; Israel, Israel and the Jewish people; Jews, enemis of the Jewish people, the Soviet Union, the PLO, fanaticism Islam, "Liberal Opinion"; the West, the liberal democracies and Israel; Israel, a liberal democracy; Palestine, the Palestinian situation; Israel, the supposed Jewish/Zionist pressure on world politics anti-semitism, etc. This is followed by a question and answer period between audience and panel members. <2hr 22mn>
