This film shows highlights of the antiquities held by the New York Public Library. The footage shows: close-up of man turning pages of a very old book. The books are locked behind fireproof doors at the library. Extreme close-up of the pride of the collection, a baked clay cylinder describing certain public works accomplished by Nebuchadnezzar, inscribed 600 years B.C. Footage shows hands rotating the 1-foot-long cylinder. Extreme close-up of a baked clay cone, 4,500 years old, rescued from the ruins of Babylon. It measures approximately 6 inches. Extreme close-up of a copy of the historic Chaldean Flood tablet discovered during excavations in the Euphrates Valley. On it is inscribed in ancient Assyrian a description of the Deluge. The original is in the British Museum. Extreme close-up of fragments of the Koran, hand-lettered in vellum in the 10th century. Extreme close-up of the Historic Pentateuch Roll containing the books of Exodus and Leviticus and actually used by the lost colony of Jews at Kaifong Fu in the 15th century. Extreme close-up of a huge Latin Psalter, hand-lettered and decorated on parchment, by German monks in 1375. Extreme close-up of a Burmese Bottle-book, with text scratched on palm leaves and preserved through the ages in a bottle made of paper pulp. Footage shows hands removing the bottle top and taking palm leaves out.~The film continues with, "A quaint Siamese book of omens used by the Buddhist fortune tellers in 1400", "An early example of wood-block printing, valued at $15,000. Block cut in 1470". The film ends with a look at, "The 'Bay' Psalm Book--first book printed in English in America--value $10,000."
