Interview of Dr. Douglas Eaton as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson at Eaton’s home in St. John’s, Newfoundland, on the evening of 12 June 1979. Eaton talks about: being the first Newfoundlander to pursue a university degree in physical education; recollections of his early school days in Newfoundland; comments on the physical education program of the 1930s and on interschool sports; a description of the education system in Newfoundland and its ties with religion; the domination, in the early years, of St. Bonaventure School teams in Newfoundland sport; undergraduate preparation at the University of Toronto in the first degree program in Canada in 1945; work experience with the YMCA in Belleville, Ontario from 1948 to 1949; his first teaching experience in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia from 1949 to 1952; teaching at Bridgewater, Nova Scotia in 1952 and 1953; his appointment to Memorial University to initiate a physical education program there in 1953; a description of physical education programs in Newfoundland schools in the 1940s; the introduction of a diploma program in physical education and recreation at Memorial University in 1955; the growth of Memorial University in the 1950s and the 1960s; the development of appreciation for physical education in Newfoundland and the influence of Joey Smallwood, Dr. Gooliew and Dr. Morgan of Memorial University; the relationship of university with community with respect to sports activities; provincial government support for sport and physical education in Newfoundland; sport as a cultural phenomenon in Newfoundland; the affect of Bill C-131, the Fitness and Amateur Sport Act of 1961, on recreation and sport in Newfoundland; the importance of trout fishing in Newfoundland as a recreational activity for everyone; further comments on the Fitness and Amateur Sport Act of 1961; the development of a degree program in physical education and recreation at Memorial University in 1961; the structural organization of sport and recreation in Newfoundland; a reference to the Newfoundland Sports Federation and the provincial government department in sport and recreation; the Summer Canada Games of 1977; the organization of the Summer Canada Games and his involvement as Chair of the Sports and Technical Committee; his involvement with the Red Cross swimming program in Newfoundland; John Tobin broadcasting hockey games in St. John’s; a description of the Annual Regatta on Quidi Vidi Lake in St. John’s and the Outer Cove crew of 1901 and its record time of 9:13: comments on Dr. Arthur S. Lamb and his influence on the development of undergraduate degree programs in Canada; the founding of the Canadian Physical Education Association; and Dr. Lamb’s early views on the participation of women in Olympic competition.
