Interview of William McEwen as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson in Vancouver, British Columbia, on the afternoon of 18 May 1979. McEwen talks about: his early background and interest in sport; his association with professional football in the early 1960s with the Ottawa Rough Riders; his association with amateur football and influence in establishing the Interprovincial Junior Football League; membership in the Canadian Rugby Union and tenure as the last president; the circumstances resulting in the transfer of the Grey Cup from the Canadian Rugby Union to the Canadian Football League; founding of the Canadian Amateur Football Association (CAFA) and tenure as its first president; thoughts the role of CAFA as a feeder system for professional football similar to junior hockey and the National Hockey League; the relationship between CAFA and the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union (CIAU); thoughts on the relationship of amateur sport to professional sport in Canada; recollections of membership on the National Advisory Council on Fitness and Amateur Sport; thoughts on the changing role of the Council; the relationship between the Council and professional staff; the influence of the Council in introducing Participaction; thoughts on the role of government in sport in Canada; the early development of the Canada Games; the underlying philosophy of the Games; how the Games are organized; the legacy of Games facilities; the organization and function of the Canada Games Council; how sites are determined and the program established; reflection on the Sports Federation of Canada and his tenure as president; further views of the role of government in sport; his recollection of the Canadian Amateur Sports Federation as a predecessor to the Sports Federation of Canada; and his personal belief in the value of sport.
