Interview of Mrs. Mary Brown as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson in Brown’s home in Vancouver, British Columbia, on the evening of 16 May 1979. She talks about: her early up-bringing in Surrey, B.C.; her introduction to professional training at the Vancouver Normal School; physical education programs in British Columbia in the 1930s and 1940s; the Pro-Rec program in B.C. with Ian Eisenhardt initially and then with Ernie and Marjorie Lee; her first teaching experiences in B.C; her work with cadet programs and the Strathcona Trust; study at McGill University from 1945 to 1947; the influence of Dr. Arthur S. Lamb; appointment to the staff of the University of British Columbia in 1947; her duties and responsibilities in the undergraduate degree program and university’s compulsory program of instruction; his work with the YWCA over the years; her experiences with summer school teaching in B.C. and at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia; experiences in camping and outdoor education; early days with the YMCA Camp Elfenstone, in Vancouver; the founding of the private camp, Camp Decca, with her husband Lorne Brown in 1961; her work with the Canadian Camping Association (CCA) and attendance at the first CCA conference in Ontario in 1947 and her service as CCA President 1965-1967; the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (CAHPER); Lorne Brown as CAPHER president from 1955 to 1957; the accomplishments of Lorne Brown and his contributions to the profession during his lifetime until his death in 1976; her involvement with field hockey over the years; graduate study at the University of British Columbia; earning a Masters degree in 1961 and becoming the first woman in the field in B.C.; service on the National Advisory Council on Fitness and Amateur Sport from 1963 to 1965 and 1965 to 1967, as well as a third term in theearly 1970s; her job as Chair of the Grants Committee during the first two terms; a comparison between the role of the council in the early 1960s and later in the 1970s; professional associates who have made major contributions to the profession in the 20th century, including: Blackie Blackstock, Dr. Arthur S. Lamb, Maury Van Vliet and Max Howell; and major accomplishments within the profession in Canada during the 20th century, including: increased participation by youth in carry-over type sports activities under the influence of sports governing bodies; the excellence of facilities available across Canada and increased public support for sport and physical education.
