Interview of Ken Farmer, as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson in Farmer’s Montreal West home on the afternoon of 16 February 1979. Farmer speaks about: his early interest and participation in sport; high school education in Sainte-Anne de Bellevue and Montreal; hockey at McGill University with the Victorias, and as a member of the Canadian Olympic team of 1936; his appointment as Chair of the first National Council on Fitness and Amateur Sport, his feelings about the experience and the structure and function of the Council; reflections on the Canadian Sports Advisory Council of the late 1950s and its influence on the introduction of Bill C-131, the Fitness and Amateur Sport Act of 1961; thoughts on the successes and failures of the Council; public concern for improved Canadian performance in international competition, particularly in hockey; major concerns of various sports groups seeking funds from the Council; involvement with the Canadian Olympic Association; thoughts on the effectiveness of the National Advisory Council; the composition and role of the Canadian Olympic Association in the early years, from the time of its incorporation in 1950-1951; the breakaway of the Canadian Olympic Association from the Amateur Athletic Union of Canada; the relationship of the Canadian Olympic Association to the International Olympic Committee; the Task Force Report on Sport in Canada (1968); thoughts on the creation of the Sports Administrative Centre rather than the National Sports Training Centre; the development of the scholarship and research program within the National Advisory Council; international involvement with sport, including the Pan American Games and the Commonwealth Games; reflections on his association with Colonel Jack Davies; recollections of other associates in sport considered to have made significant contributions to sport in Canada, including: George Machem; Dr. Arthur S. Lamb; Nelson Hart and Sidney Dawes; the influence of volunteers on the early development of sport in Canada; opinions about the future of sport in Canada; athletic scholarships; advances made by some sports organizations in areas such as swimming; the weakness of school physical education; the improvement in Canada’s performance in international competition; and violence in hockey.
