Interview of Cécile Grenier as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson in Grenier’s Montreal West home on the afternoon of 11 December 1978. Grenier speaks about: her early family background in Quebec and the strong, positive influence of her father; the development of interest in gymnastics and sports and early training in the field; early schooling an first teaching experience in Toronto; teaching experiences in elementary and secondary French Catholic schools in Montreal in the 1930s; her involvement with gymnastic and sport Festivals of French Catholic schools; training received in gymnastics in Sweden; the development of an elite group of leaders to assist the teaching of physical education in French schools in Montreal; the development of girls’ programs in Montreal schools; the founding of the Institut d’Éducation Physique in Montreal in 1939 and the evolution of the program; conflict with the clergy in Quebec; the summer in-service program at Plateau Hall, Montreal; the influence of the Institut in other areas of the province; the development of teaching materials and translation of published work in physical education and dance; the introduction of Medau gymnastics; reminiscences of her involvement with the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (CAHPER) and the beginning of the Quebec Association in the early 1930s; comments on the International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women; her personal philosophy of physical education for girls; Francophone physical educators considered to have made significant contributions to the field, including: Marcel de la Sabloniére, René Bélisle, L. St. Pierre, Gisèle Desrosierres and Raymond Paquin; and comments on the outstanding cooperation received from Eileen Reid of Montreal Protestant Schools.
