Interview of F.M. Van Wagner as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson in Wagner’s apartment in Westmount, Quebec on the morning of 11 December 1978. Wagner speaks about: discussion of the lack of opportunity existing in the 1920s for a non-medical person to become Director of any department of physical education in Canadian universities; comments on the respectability of physical education and its status at McGill and the University of Toronto in the 1920s; recollections of Dr. Arthur S. Lamb’s early days at McGill; Van Wagner’s appointment of Track and Field coach at McGill in 1920 and recollection of early days of coaching basketball and track as first full-time coach in a Canadian university; early days of Canadian intercollegiate competition; competitions of McGill basketball teams with American universities in the 1920s and 1930s; the organization of university athletic clubs; the introduction of full-time coaches in Canadian universities; the athletic programs in Montreal schools in the 1920s and 1930s and qualification of high school coaches; the early development of hockey in Canada and its origin in the 1800s; a case made for McGill as the birthplace of organized hockey; early development of the McGill School of Physical Education; the Diploma course with Ethel Mary Cartwright and the beginning of the degree course in 1945; the development of the McGill Ski School program in 1941 and the use of Canadian Ski Alliance instructors; recollections of the beginning of the McGill Outing Club; the introduction of camping to the undergraduate program in physical education; the founding of Camp Nominique in 1925; the second private camp in Quebec after one founded by Powter of Montreal; involvement with the Quebec Camping Association and the Canadian Camping Association; the first President of both organizations; the development of standardsfor the operation of private camps; the formation of the Quebec Physical Education Association, the forerunner of the Canadian Association in 1933; the identification of colleagues considered to have made significant contributions to physical education in Canada including Dr. Arthur S. Lamb and Jack Lang; major accomplishments within the profession in Canada during the 20th century including the acceptance by the general public of the value of physical education and increased participation in physical activity by the general public, particularly in cross-country skiing; the scientific study of the effects of exercise; and philosophical comments on the value of physical education and exercise and the responsibilities of the physical educator as example or model.
