Interview of Stuart Bird as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta on the morning of 21 November 1978. Bird speaks about: his personal background and career accomplishments; early development of interest in sports and games; early schooling in Saskatchewan and the physical education programs in the 1920s; his early teaching experiences in Saskatchewan rural schools and in teaching physical education in Regina; programs in effect at that time; professional preparation at Normal School in Saskatoon, undergraduate study at the University of Washington and graduate study at New York University; reflections on the influence of Dr. Jay B. Nash; reminiscences about the physical education programs in Saskatchewan and Alberta schools during the 1930s and 1940s; experiences and responsibilities as Supervisor of Physical Education for the Edmonton Public School Board from 1938 to 1968; programs of physical education in Edmonton schools during that period; the introduction of the "Basic Movement" concept to Edmonton schools; the description of the program and its reception by teachers; a description of the semi-survival camp program introduced in Alberta and the reason for introducing it; the evolution of the interscholastic athletic program in Alberta generally and in Edmonton specifically; his experience and responsibilities with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War; his involvement with and reflections about the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (CAHPER) since its founding in 1933; his involvement with the Alberta Camping Association and a discussion of interest in outdoor activities and the development of school camping; professional associates considered to have made significant contributions to physical education in Canada, including: Doris Plewes; Jack McKenzie; Kas Vidruk; Bob Routledge; Gordon Brandreth; Ian Eisenhardt; Dr. Arthur S. Lamb and Blackie Blackstock; comments on major accomplishments within the profession in Canada during the 20th century, including: the growing importance of the place of physical education in schools; the growth of undergraduate programs in physical education, particularly the influence of the University of Alberta and Dr. Maury Van Vliet; and the increase in the promotion of and participation in physical fitness activities; thoughts on the future of the profession; thoughts on the optional program of physical education; reflection on the evolution and development of facilities and equipment for physical education in Alberta; retirement activities such as bee-keeping and trap shooting; responsibilities at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton; and thoughts and reflections on the positive influence of a man’s career on wife and family.
