Interview of Dr. M.L. "Maury" Van Vliet as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson in Van Vleet’s Commonwealth Games office in Edmonton, Alberta on the afternoon of 20 November 1978. Dr. Van Vliet speaks about: his early days as a student and athlete at the University of Oregon; his experiences and responsibilities at the University of British Columbia; the development of undergraduate programs in physical education and recreation at the University of Alberta during the 1950s; thoughts on the development of graduate studies in physical education in Canada; Recreation Leadership programs at the University of Alberta and thoughts on the interrelationship of physical education with recreation and the need to bring together school and community programs; his personal opinion on the reasons for the show progress of graduate study in Canadian universities; his recollection of Pro-Rec programs in the 1930s and 1940s in British Columbia and the development of a similar program in Alberta with Joe Ross and Gerry Matheson; thoughts on the National Physical Fitness Act of 1943, the influence of the Canadian Physical Education Association and Dr. Arthur S. Lamb on the introduction of the act; the effect of the Act on physical fitness and recreation in Canada; reflections on the National Physical Fitness Advisory Council of 1943-1954 and the National Advisory Council on Fitness and Amateur Sport of 1961 to the present; a comparison of their respective roles and membership; recollections of the Canadian Sports Advisory Committee of 1957 to 1961 and its place in the scheme of things; reflections on Canadian intercollegiate athletics; philosophical comments on the place of intercollegiate sport in Canadian colleges and universities; thoughts the recent merger of the Women’s and Men’s Intercollegiate Athletic Unions; experiences and responsibilities in the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (CAHPER) and thoughts and feelings about the role and purpose of professional associations, particularly CAHPER; reminiscences about the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton in 1978 and personal feelings about this experience as President of the Organizing Committee; thoughts on the involvement of governments in sport; a philosophical discussion on the direction in which sport in Canada should go in the future; professional associates considered to have made significant contributions to physical education, sport and recreation in Canada, including: Hugh Noble; Dorothy Walker; Dr. Arthur S. Lamb; Howard Crocker; Florence Somers; Iveagh Munro; Mary Barker; Jack Passmore; Blackie Blackstock; Bill Orban; Earle Zeigler; Frank Kennedy; Cécile Grenier; Zereda Slack and Hart Devenney; comments on major accomplishments within the profession in Canada during the 20th century, including: the growth in facilities; the growth in undergraduate programs in physical education and recreation; and the improvement in the quality of physical education and recreation programs generally; and personal feelings about the awarding of two Honorary Doctorates.
