Interview of James Worrall, Q.C., as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson in Worrall’s Toronto office on the morning of 15 November 1978. Worrall speaks about: his early childhood in England; school experiences in Montreal; competing for Canada in the British Empire Games in London in 1934; his experiences as a competitor in the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936; his reflections on Canada’s participation in the 1936 Berlin Games; his thoughts on the place of international competitions, such as the Olympic Games, in Canadian society; his reflections on his experiences as a member of the Canadian Olympic Team; reminiscences of early competitions in Canada; his involvement with the Canadian Olympic Association, through the ranks to the presidency; a discussion of the International Olympic Committee, its structure, function and the process of appointment to membership; the length and extent of Canadian representation on the International Olympic Committee; thoughts on the demise of the Amateur Athletic Union of Canada; his involvement with the Canadian Sports Advisory Council from 1954 to 1961; his work on the Harry Price Commission in Ontario in 1959; Bill C-131, the Fitness and Amateur Sport Act of 1961; his responsibilities as a member of the first National Advisory Council on Fitness and Amateur Sport from 1961 to 1963 and its Chair from 1963 to 1965; his thoughts on the role of the Council; his reflections on government involvement in sport; and a philosophical dissertation on future aspirations for sport in Canada.
