Interview of John H. Passmore as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson in Passmore’s home in Richmond, Hill, Ontario on the morning of 14 November 1978. Passmore speaks about: his early days in Hamilton, Ontario in the 1920s; the athletic program and physical education in Central Collegiate in Hamilton; the influence of track coach J.R. Cornelius; undergraduate training at McMaster University and the College of Education, University of Toronto from 1930 to 1934; his early days of teaching in Ottawa and Toronto schools from 1934 to 1937; his experience as Supervisor of Physical Education in the Ottawa school system from 1937 to 1939; his Graduate Study at the University of Wisconsin; his experiences in the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Air Force physical training and drill programs; his appointment to the teaching staff at the University of Toronto College of Education; introduction of health education to Ottawa high schools; the certification program at the Ontario College of Education in Toronto; the conversion of the Ontario College of Education to the Faculty of Education, University of Toronto; the relationship of the Ontario College of Education to the undergraduate degree program at the University of Toronto; his experience as the principal at the Armed Forces School in Zweibrucken, Germany, his responsibilities and the program; the founding of the Ontario Physical Education Council and the relationship to the Physical Education Section of the Ontario Education Association; his involvement with the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (CAHPER); arrangements to establish a national office and secure the services of Blackie Blackstock as Executive Secretary; the publication of the health education text entitled “Building Health”; his involvement in the camping program of the Ontario Department ofEducation in the late 1940s; his interest in outdoor education and the organization of the first Outdoor Education Conference at Geneva Park in 1967; the publication of the national survey; his personal philosophy on the use of the outdoors in physical education programs as compared with traditional gym-oriented programs; his involvement with the Canadian Red Cross Society and the preparation of the Water Safety Manual; his interest in the Mill of Kintail, a museum for the work of Dr. Robert Tait McKenzie; professional associates considered to have made significant contributions to the profession in Canada, including: Dr. Arthur S. Lamb; Warren Stevens; M.G. Griffiths; Hugh Noble; John Meagher; Fern Landry; Bill L’Heureux; Rae Speirs; Blackie Blackstock; Bob Osborne; Max Howell; Maury Van Vliet; Herb McLachlan; Frank Kennedy and Jack McKenzie; and his opinions on major accomplishments within the profession in Canada during the 20th century, including: public acceptance of the importance of physical education and acceptance by educators that physical education is an integral part of education; and the contributions of CAHPER as a professional organization.
