Interview of Dorothy Walker as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson in her office at the Teachers’ Centre in New Minas, Nova Scotia, on the afternoon of 23 October 1978. Walker speaks about: her early teaching experience at Havergal College in Toronto, Ontario from 1941 to 1946; professional preparation at Margaret Eaton School, Toronto, from 1939 to 1941; her work with the Physical Fitness Division of the Department of Public Health in Nova Scotia from 1946 to 1963 and the evolution of its program; a description of facilities available for physical education in schools in Nova Scotia in the early days; her experiences teaching at the Nova Scotia Teachers’ College in Truro and the evolution of summer school programs from 1953 to 1965; thoughts on the comparison between elementary school physical education programs of today with those of yesteryear; her recollection of past involvement with the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (CAHPER); her thoughts on the place of sport for girls and women; her opinions on the importance of competition; her experiences with the National Advisory Council for Fitness and Amateur Sport from 1961 to 1963; the Council’s role; the earlier National Physical Fitness Council; and the composition of the Advisory Council, its representation and scholarship program; opinions on the involvement of governments in sport and recreation; and her comments on professional associates considered to have made significant contributions to physical education, sport and recreation in Canada during the 20th century, including: Florence Somers; Hugh Noble; Rose Hill; Dr. Arthur S. Lamb; Jack Lang; Gordon Wright and Nora Chatwin. In conclusion, Walker gives her opinions on the most significant accomplishments within the profession in Canada during the 20th century, including: the growth in facilities; the hiring of fully qualified teachers; the growth of the Canada Games; and summer camps in dance and sports skills.
