Interview of John G. Lang as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson in Lang’s Montreal apartment on the morning of 19 July 1978. Lang speaks about: early days with the YMCA in St. Thomas, Ontario; service with the Royal Air Force during the First World War; his work as a physical education instructor in the YMCA in Halifax in 1919; experiences at Springfield College and teaching in Springfield schools in the early 1920s; program and responsibilities at the University of Western Ontario from 1926 to 1930; early experiences with physical education in the Protestant school system in Montreal in the early 1930s; the development of the physical education program in Montreal schools under the supervision of Jack Lang; the reference to the state of physical education in Catholic schools in Montreal; Jack Lang’s philosophy on conduct of classes in physical education in school; the organization of the Greater Montreal Interscholastic Athletic Association and reflections on the early development of this organization; early involvement with the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (CAHPER), then the Canadian Physical Education Association in 1933; the influence of Dr. Arthur S. Lamb; the Quebec association; the cooperation with the Ontario group; and the newsletter; the discussion of the Honour Awards of CAHPER and AAHPER and of the relationship between those two national organizations; close professional associates considered to have made significant contributions to the field, including: Hugh Noble; Morris Braker; Stan Rough; Gordon Brandreth; Bob Jarman; Rae Speirs; Fritz Mahroney; Ruth Evans; Peter Karpovitch; Josephine Rathbone; Dorothy Ainsworth; René Bélisle and Cécile Grenier; organization of Victory Loan demonstrations in the Montreal Forum during the Second World War; thoughts on the development of physical education in Catholic schools in Quebec as compared with that in Protestant schools; influence of the Strathcona Trust Fund on physical education in Canadian schools; the influence of Dr. Arthur S. Lamb in changing the emphasis in physical education from the military approach of the Strathcona Trust to an educational emphasis; his experience in camping as Director of McCauley Camp at l’Original, Ontario, a welfare camp run by the United Church of Canada; and a philosophical dissertation on the direction for newcomers to the field, the entering professional, and what they should do to enhance the profession.
