Coverage of the Conservative Party of Canada 2004 leadership convention. This was the first election the party's leader, following the merger in 1993 between the Canadian Alliance and members of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. Leadership candidates are Belinda Stronach, Tony Clement and Stephen Harper. Stronach (b.1966) was a former CEO of Magna International, a Canadian auto-parts manufacturer. Tony Clement (b. 1961), a lawyer and politician, was as a former MPP for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario and Minister of Health for the province of Ontario. Stephen Harper (b.1954) an economist, was a MP for Calgary Southwest (elected 2002) and former leader of the Alliance Party. He had been a Member of Parliament for Calgary West (1993-1997) and one of the founders of Reform Party of Canada. Harper wins on the first ballot.
