Alors qu'ils campent en forêt, Mikuan et son neveu Tshako font la connaissance d'Ushkui, un arbre bouleau qui veille sur une grotte magique. Moyennant quelques chansons et traductions innues, Ushkui leur permet d'entrer dans ce lieu ancestral où ils rencontrent l'Esprit de Tshakapesh, héros des légendes innues.
