THE RIVER KING is a feature drama based on Alice Hoffman's novel of the same name. Abel Grey, a small-town cop, and his partner discover a dead teenager's body floating under ice in a frozen river. The victim is identified as Gus Pierce, an estranged prep school student. Fearing scandal, the school wants to keep things quiet, insisting Gus' death was suicide. While the police concurs and rules the incident as suicide, Abel has a reason to suspect that the death was a hazing incident gone too far. He discovers from Gus' only friend and fellow student, Carlin, that Gus was being bullied by a group of boys led by a guy she briefly dated. Following a series of mysteriously placed clues, Abel is led to believe that a schoolboy initiation went terribly wrong. Determined to uncover the truth, he solicits the help of a kind and smitten photography teacher, Betsy, who believes that clues are being left by the dead boy's spirit. As he digs deeper to uncover the answers to the student death, Abel is also forced to confront the truth about himself - he is a man manipulated by the ghosts of his own past, his personal demons stemming from the suicide of his older brother years earlier. <1h 39mn 30s>
