THE PINECREST DIARIES is the story of three boys - 14 year-old Nasser who is in grade 8 and facing peer pressure, his 12 year-old brother Fawaz who is struggling with his school work, and 13-year old Thamer in need a father figure - their community and a principal who refused to give up on the troubled elementary school that connects them all.In a low income Ottawa neighbourhood with the largest concentration of immigrants in the city, Pinecrest Elementary has fallen through the cracks. Caught between under-funding and a high needs community, Pinecrest's reputation for poor academics and bad behaviour is threatening the school's very existence. But under the inspired leadership of its new principal, the school and its students have begun an amazing turnaround. Principal Charles Austin is determined to get Pinecrest back on track.With intimate access to daily life at the school, the documentary juxtaposes the compelling stories of the boys with the school's and the neighbourhood's battles to help the boys succeed.Photographed and directed in verité style, the documentary raises important and timely questions about how our public schools are responding to the needs of these communities, and why early efforts are so vital to insuring their children's success. <43mn 30s>
